Maestra Sebrina Mara Alfonso formed the South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) in 1997, and since then it has grown into a world-class cultural institution that serves all of South Florida, from Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe County.
The SFSO contributes vitality, creativity, and a stronger public commitment to the arts because it is led by the conviction that music is essential to community participation.
Recent achievements include being named a "Major Cultural Institution" in Broward County, one of only a few organizations to get this distinction. Another significant development is that the Symphony has been named the Broward Center for the Performing Arts' "Special Presentations Partner." An organization is rarely given this rank, which is a rare award. The advantage is that the Broward Center now collaborates on concert productions with the Symphony and makes use of their marketing alliances.
In its dedication to symphonic music for impoverished communities, the South Florida Symphony Orchestra is a trailblazer. Beginning in 1997, the Symphony in the Schools program encourages culturally underserved students and their families to engage in the arts. Since its start, The Symphony has had a positive impact on the lives of nearly 50,000 students.
Partnerships with the SFSO are advancing the classical music genre and drawing in new listeners.
