About National Arts Centre Orchestra

The National Arts Centre Orchestra is one of Canada’s premier musical ensembles. Founded in 1969 and based in Ottawa, ON, the orchestra consists of approximately 70 permanent members, many of whom are sought-after soloists as well as members of chamber and symphony orchestras around the world. The orchestra has won numerous awards and accolades over the years, including two JUNOs for the best classical album in 2012 and 2017 and a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award in 2018. It has been under the baton of Pinchas Zuckerman and the National Arts Centre Orchestra since 1998, and he has helped the orchestra to become one of today’s leading symphony orchestras. Working with a wide range of international composers and musicians, they have continued to push the boundaries of what is possible musically. NAC Orchestra is home to some world-renowned soloists such as Pinchas Zukerman, concertmaster Jonathan Crow, principal cellist Amanda Forsyth and associate principal violinist Yosuke Kawasaki.

The Orchestra's repertoire ranges from Bach to Stravinsky to Bernstein - from classic works to new commissions from Canadian composers. They have recorded more than 40 albums and performed hundreds of concerts at venues throughout Canada such as Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, La Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier in Montreal, Chan Centre for the Performing Arts in Vancouver, Stadttheater Bregenz in Austria, Carnegie Hall in New York City and Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. The National Arts Centre Orchestra is also known for its popular outdoor concerts across Ottawa attended by thousands each summer. In addition to their concerts, they are often featured at major festivals such as Ottawa Chamberfest (2014) Luminato Festival Toronto (2015), and Ravinia Festival (2010). They have also performed on-screen alongside legendary actor Sir Ian McKellen for Tolkien (2019). All these achievements demonstrate Music by the National Arts Centre Orchestra's commitment to celebrating music across all genres through passionate collaboration between audience and artist alike that continues even today.
