About Nathalie Stutzmann

Nathalie Stutzmann, born on May 6, 1965, in Suresnes, France, is a distinguished contralto and conductor who has significantly influenced the classical music landscape. Raised in a musical family—her mother, Christiane Stutzmann, was a soprano, and her father, Christian Dupuy, a bass—Nathalie's early immersion in music led her to study piano, bassoon, and cello. She honed her vocal skills under the tutelage of her mother and furthered her education at the Conservatoire de Nancy and the École d'Art Lyrique of the Paris Opera, where she studied lieder with Hans Hotter. Stutzmann's professional debut occurred in 1985 at the Salle Pleyel in Paris, performing Bach's *Magnificat*. Her rich, dark contralto voice has since graced numerous prestigious venues worldwide, establishing her as one of the foremost interpreters of French mélodies and German lieder.

Throughout her illustrious career, Stutzmann has collaborated with renowned orchestras and conductors, showcasing her versatility across a broad repertoire. Her discography encompasses over 80 recordings, featuring works by composers such as Bach, Handel, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Honegger. Notable albums include *Quella Fiamma: Arie Antiche* (2017) and *Contralto* (2021), both recorded with her ensemble Orfeo 55, which she founded in 2009. Her recording of Glière and Mosolov's Harp Concertos with harpist Xavier de Maistre and the WDR Symphony Orchestra earned her the 2023 Opus Klassik "Concerto Recording of the Year" award. In 2022, she released a complete set of Beethoven's Piano Concertos with pianist Haochen Zhang and The Philadelphia Orchestra, which *Gramophone* magazine lauded as "a brilliant collaboration that I urge you to not miss."

In 2025, as the Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Stutzmann is set to lead a series of compelling performances. The season features a complete Beethoven Symphony cycle, including Symphonies No. 6 ("Pastoral") and No. 8 on March 1, Symphonies No. 4 and No. 7 on March 6, 8, and 9, and the *Missa Solemnis* from May 8 to 11. Additionally, she will conduct Strauss's *Eine Alpensinfonie* and Beethoven's Triple Concerto on April 3 and 4, with soloists David Coucheron (violin), Daniel Laufer (cello), and Julie Coucheron (piano). Stutzmann's engagements also include returns to esteemed ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, and The Philadelphia Orchestra. In June 2025, she is scheduled to conduct Bizet's *Carmen* at La Monnaie in Brussels, further solidifying her reputation as a versatile and dynamic conductor on the international stage.
