The Memphis Symphony Orchestra is an American orchestra based in the city of Memphis, Tennessee. The most popular venue for their performances is the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts. The MSO performs classical and pops concerts, as well as educational and community outreach programs. The MSO was founded in 1925 as the Memphis Civic Orchestra, with Walter Hendricks as its first conductor. The orchestra gave its first concert on February 15, 1926 at the Cotton Carnival Auditorium (now the Cannon Center). In 1928, the orchestra changed its name to the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. The MSO gave its first performances at the newly built Ellis Auditorium in 1929. The orchestra continued to perform at Ellis Auditorium until the building was closed in 1966. From 1966 to 1972, the MSO performed at Mid-South Coliseum. In 1972, the orchestra moved to its current home, the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts. The MSO has been led by a number of eminent conductors, including Robert Shaw, William Steinberg, Lawrence Foster, and Mikhail Pletnev. The current music director is Robert Moody. The MSO performs classical concerts as well as pops concerts. The orchestra also offers educational programs, such as the Memphis Symphony Orchestra Youth Orchestra and the Memphis Symphony Orchestra School of Music. The MSO also participates in a number of community outreach initiatives, such as the Memphis Symphony Orchestra Community Concert Series and the Memphis Symphony Orchestra Neighborhood Series.
