The Lexington Singers, Inc. is a non-profit organization formed to provide opportunities for the citizens of Lexington and the surrounding communities. Founded in 1972, the Lexington Singers have become one of Kentucky's premier choral groups, performing at venues such as Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, and The White House. The group has also toured extensively throughout Europe and South America, performing in cities such as Paris, Rome, and Buenos Aires. The Lexington Singers are known for their diverse repertoire which includes classical works from the Renaissance to contemporary music. They are also renowned for their innovative programming which often features collaborations with other artists and ensembles. Over the years, they have performed with acclaimed soloists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Renee Fleming, and Kathleen Battle; orchestras including the Boston Pops Orchestra; and choirs from around the world including Choir of King’s College Cambridge and Coro de Camara de Madrid.
The group has earned numerous awards including two Grammy nominations for Best Choral Performance (1991 & 1997). They have also received numerous accolades from various publications including Gramophone Magazine which named them “one of the world’s finest choral ensembles” in 1993. In addition to their performances, they are dedicated to giving back to their community through education programs such as “Sing Out Loud” which provides free vocal instruction to elementary students in Lexington Public Schools. 2023 marks a special year for The Lexington Singers as they celebrate their 50th anniversary! To commemorate this milestone event, they will be hosting several concerts featuring some of today's leading artists including soprano Dawn Upshaw, tenor Lawrence Brownlee and baritone Nathan Gunn. These concerts will take place at some of Kentucky's most prestigious venues such as The Kentucky Center for Arts in Louisville and The Grand Theatre in Frankfort.
