James Conlon is an American conductor. He is the Music Director of the Los Angeles Opera and Principal Conductor of the Cincinnati May Festival. He has conducted operas, ballets, and orchestral works on four continents.
Conlon was born in New York City and raised in nearby Pelham Manor. His father was an attorney, and his mother was a schoolteacher. He began piano lessons at age four and soon showed a talent for music. When he was ten, he started studying the violin. He attended the High School of Music & Art in Manhattan, where he played in the school orchestra. He later studied at the Juilliard School, graduating in 1970.
Conlon made his conducting debut in 1974 with the New York City Opera. He has since conducted at many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, and the Royal Opera House. He has also conducted at the Bavarian State Opera, the Berlin State Opera, and the Vienna State Opera.
In addition to his work in opera, Conlon is a noted conductor of symphonic music. He has conducted the orchestras of the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He has also conducted at the BBC Proms and at the Edinburgh International Festival.
Conlon is a recipient of the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors. He was named Musical America's Conductor of the Year in 2006. In 2010, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama.
