About Cleveland Orchestra

The Cleveland Orchestra is one of the most renowned American orchestras and has been a leader in the orchestral world since its founding in 1918. The orchestra was founded by Adella Prentiss Hughes, who wanted to bring classical music to the city of Cleveland. Since then, it has become an institution of great cultural importance and one of the most respected orchestras in the world. The Cleveland Orchestra has won numerous awards and honors over the years, including three Grammy Awards and seven Grammy Nominations, as well as two Emmy Awards for their television broadcasts. They have also been honored with two Pulitzer Prizes for Music and a Kennedy Center Honor for their extraordinary contribution to American culture. The orchestra's home venue is Severance Hall, located in University Circle on the campus of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. It was designed by architect Henry Hohauser and opened in 1931. The hall features a magnificent chandelier that hangs from its ceiling and a grand staircase leading to its stage.

The Cleveland Orchestra also performs at Blossom Music Center during the summer months, an outdoor amphitheater located near Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The orchestra's current music director is Franz Welser-Möst, who joined them in 2002; he is known for his dynamic programming that combines classic repertoire with modern works by living composers such as John Adams and Gyorgy Ligeti. The orchestra's roster includes some of the best musicians from around the globe, including principal cellist Mark Kosower and concertmaster William Preucil Jr., both recipients of Avery Fisher Career Grants. Last 2022 season, The Cleveland Orchestra will feature a variety of exciting concerts ranging from traditional classics to contemporary works by living composers such as John Adams or Gyorgy Ligeti. The orchestra will also be performing at various venues throughout Ohio such as Akron Civic Theatre or EJ Thomas Hall at The University Of Akron as part of their “On Tour” series. In 2023, they will be embarking on their first international tour since 2001 with performances in Europe and Asia!
