About Peter Hook

Peter Hook is an English musician, best known as the bassist and co-founder of the rock bands Joy Division and New Order. He has also been active in the side project The Light. Born in Bury, Lancashire, he grew up in a working-class family and was educated at St Matthew's RC Primary School and Burnden Park Secondary Modern School. As a teenager, he played bass guitar in local bands, including the Drones. He joined Joy Division in 1976 at the age of 18. With Joy Division, he recorded Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980); the latter was released after the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis. After Curtis's death, Hook and the other members of Joy Division decided to continue under the New Order name. In addition to his musical activities, Hook has a sideline career as a music journalist. He contributed a regular column to the British music magazine New Musical Express from 2002 to 2007, and his autobiography Substance: Inside New Order was published in 2007. Hook currently resides in Salford, Greater Manchester. Hook and Bernard Sumner started the group that would become Joy Division in 1976.

Hook played bass with the group until 2007 when they regrouped as New Order after the passing of lead singer Ian Curtis in 1980. In May 2007, Hook was interviewed by Terry Stauntons on The Culture Show about his time with Joy Division. When asked why he thought the band was so successful, he answered "Because we were honest. We didn't pretend to be something we weren't. We were four very normal guys from Salford who just wanted to make a great noise." In September 2010, Hook performed with New Order on the BBC's Electric Proms. The band performed three songs from their forthcoming album, including "Ceremony", which was released as a single the following month. On 18 October 2010, Hook took part in the UK television series Never Mind the Buzzcocks. He was a guest captain on Phill Jupitus's team, along with bandmate Bernard Sumner. In March 2015, Hook opened a club called The Factory in Manchester. The club is located on the site of the former hacienda nightclub, which was also co-owned by Hook.
