Located in the iconic Theatre District of Midtown Manhattan, New York City, the Neil Simon Theatre - formerly known as The Alvin Theatre - is a Broadway theater that stands tall at 250 West 52nd Street. On the same block as the Neil Simon, is where you'll find the Mark Hellinger Theatre and Gallagher's Steakhouse situated to its east. North of the August Wilson Theatre stands 810 Seventh Avenue, while behind it lies Axa Equitable Center. To its south is Paramount Plaza with Circle in the Square Theatre and Gershwin Theater situated within, followed by Winter Garden Theater further to its southeast. In 1927, Herbert J. Krapp designed and constructed the theater for Alex A. Aaron and Vinton Freedley to enjoy a memorable movie experience. With a capacity of 1,467 people, the Neil Simon Theatre is one of the Nederlander Organization's grandest theatres. The auditorium is a majestic venue, featuring an orchestra level and one balcony, in addition to boxes and a stage behind the proscenium arch.
The Nederlander Organization asserts that the auditorium has 1,445 seats; whereas The Broadway League and Playbill declare a capacity of 1,467 seats respectively. Additionally, Playbill holds to the belief that there are only 1,380 chairs present in the venue. The theater boasted a whopping 1,400 seats - 702 were in the orchestra, 674 in the balcony, and 24 adorning the boxes. The auditorium originally boasted a sophisticated palette of ivory, blue, gray, and gold complemented by lavender or mulberry-hued drapes. The theatre is divided into two distinct sections: the stage house, a six-story tall structure located to the west, and an auditorium that stands five stories high on its eastern side. The first floor is adorned with traditional terracotta blocks, which are complemented by an impressive entrance and marquee. The upper stories of both sections boast an intricate brick and terracotta façade, with arched windows, niches, and a central pediment showcasing the auditorium. Fashioned in the Adam style, this interior features two grand lobbies and a luxurious mezzanine-level lounge.
