A relic of the exciting, bustling Theater District in Midtown Manhattan, New York City is The Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. This Broadway showplace at 236 West 45th Street was previously named the Plymouth Theatre and continues to draw crowds with its vibrant shows. In 1917, the renowned Herbert J. Krapp designed a theater, particularly for the Shubert brothers and it has been open ever since! The Schoenfeld Theatre bears the moniker of Gerald Schoenfeld, long-standing president of the Shubert Organization and proprietor of the theater. The venue boasts a combined seating capacity of 1,079 over two floors for an unforgettable experience. During the first three decades of the twentieth century, Times Square established itself as a premier cultural and artistic hub for massive theatrical productions. Its effervescent energy captivated audiences until just before the Great Depression began in earnest. From the start of the 1900s, Manhattan's theater district started transitioning away from Union Square and Madison Square.
In the period between 1901 and 1920, Midtown Manhattan saw an impressive surge in theater building with a total of forty-three venues erected all around Broadway among which was the Plymouth Theatre. The Neo-Classical facade of the Broadhurst Theatre is strikingly similar in design to this, with a simplistic elegance unparalleled by any other. Crafted from buff-colored brick and terracotta, the Schoenfeld's facade allures with its two distinct sections: a stage house located to the west, as well as an entrance situated towards the east. Adorning the facade of the entrance is an array of fire-escape galleries, highlighting a curved corner that looks eastward at Broadway. Boasting an orchestra level, a spacious balcony, and even a technical gallery – the auditorium provides plentiful opportunities for engaging with its contents. The ceiling is mostly flat while additionally equipped with acoustically enhancing elements such as a sounding board to ensure optimal sound quality.
Adorned with ornamental plasterwork designs, the space is styled in exquisite Adam fashion. Majestically situated near the entrance of the auditorium, are luxurious boxes at balcony level that surround the graceful elliptical proscenium arch. At the start of the decade, productions at Schoenfeld theater included a combination of plays and musicals which usually had limited runs. In 2010, A Behanding in Spokane and A Life in the Theatre premiered; followed by The Motherfucker with the Hat and Bonnie & Clyde a year later. In 2012, audiences experienced both The Best Man and Glengarry Glen Ross, wrapping up with Orphans in 2013. Subsequently, Schoenfeld underwent a comprehensive renovation in 2014. From 2014 to 2016, the Schoenfeld Theater presented various plays and musicals such as The Bridges of Madison County, It's Only a Play, The Audience, China Doll and American Psycho.
In an unprecedented move, The Humans made the leap from Helen Hayes Theatre to Schoenfeld in 2016 due to renovations at the former. The Humans had to say goodbye in early 2017, clearing the stage for Come From Away's mesmerizing musical debut that March. For four years, people flocked to the Schoenfeld theater to experience Come From Away until its unfortunate closure as a result of COVID-19 on March 12, 2020. After almost a year of closure, the Schoenfeld reopened its doors on September 21st, 2021 with Come From Away as the star show. This extraordinary production managed to close in October 2022 after leading an impressive run of being the longest-running musical ever at that theater! In the same month, Take Me Out wowed audiences after it transferred from Hayes Theater. The highly anticipated feature-length film adaptation of Life of Pi will be hitting the big screen in March 2023! A Steady Rain achieved the highest box office success ever seen at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, becoming a much-talked-about and widely praised limited engagement drama.
During the week ending December 6, 2009, this production managed to gross an extraordinary total of $1.29 million over just eight performances! The 2014 production of It's Only a Play smashed the records when it grossed $1,455,818 during its eight performances at the end of January 2015. In 2017, the musical Come From Away shattered attendance records at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre and proudly holds that title to this day. During its nine-day run ending December 31, 2017, the production achieved an impressive gross sum of $1.83 million!
