The Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders Basketball team is one of the most successful college basketball teams in the Southwest. Established in 1979, the program has produced multiple conference titles and NCAA Tournament appearances. The Islanders have a long-standing rivalry with fellow Southland Conference team, Sam Houston State Bearkats. In 2020, their longtime head coach Willis Wilson retired after leading the TAMUCC Islanders Basketball team for 18 years, leaving behind a legacy that includes 11 NCAA tournament appearances and five regular season conference titles. Under his guidance, the Islanders won two Southland Conference basketball tournaments and advanced to the second round of three different NCAA tournaments. The TAMCCC Basketball team's home court is the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, where they play in front of a passionate fanbase known as "Islander Nation."
